High-performance nanoparticle separation

How it works:

  • A heterogeneous particle stream enters from the left in a microfludic capillary
  • A standing wave is created by counter-propagating laser beams, such as in a Fabry-Perot cavity
  • The standing wave is at an acute angle (45°) to the particle flow direction
  • This standing wave exerts optical force on the particles, causing longitudinal displacement that varies with particle size, density or index of refraction
  • The longitudinal displacement can be controlled by balancing input parameters such as optical force and flow rate
  • A barrier is placed at the end of the cavity (right side) which isolates a specific size (or size range) of particles
